NEW WORK, RAISED VOICES: A STAGED READING FORUM COMES TO LIFE IN OC
AN OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS OF NEW PLAYS
Talk Back Theatre, an ad hoc nonprofit operating under the 501(c)3 status of Arts Orange County, is launching its inaugural open call for submissions April 1, 2017. The company will select one previously unproduced play to mount as a staged reading this September at the Strawberry Bowl Festival Amphitheatre with Shakespeare Orange County. The staged reading will be followed by a curated, panel-led discussion responding to the art and the questions it raises. Both the reading and the post-reading conversation (our “talkback”) are free and open to the public.
The open call for submissions runs through May 1, 2017, after which a selection process will take place with an announcement of the chosen play in early June. Playwrights can submit their plays here, following the submission guidelines. Talk Back Theatre seeks work that will serve as the artistic centerpiece of a community conversation about pertinent social, political, and/or environmental issues of our time. Domestic and international playwrights are welcome to apply, so long at the play submitted has not had a fully staged production. Previous readings, workshops, and dramaturgical development do not disqualify a piece.
Talk Back Theatre was created to enhance the social relevance of theatre in Orange County and provide a public outlet for new work. Its mission is to stimulate thoughtful discussion, celebrate diverse voices, and enhance understanding of ourselves and others through the shared experience of live theatre. Talk Back Theatre also strives to fairly pay its artists, from actor to playwright, a practice that is uncommon in the world of staged readings.
